FIZZING TOILET CLEANER
Compared to all other household cleaning chores, many people consider cleaning the toilet to be least enjoyable but most necessary. To take an effective DIY approach to cleaning the loo, that is free of toxic chemicals, I use a fizzing toilet cleaner every few days to keep things fresh between the weekly deep cleanings.
Although I love the idea of fizzing toilet bombs or tablets, they are not always the easiest recipes to create and also require silicone or stainless steel molds. As a simplified alternative, I bring you an uncomplicated DIY fizzing toilet cleaner recipe that does not necessitate any type of mold, and only takes about five minutes to make. This recipe is a wonderful toxic-free alternative to the chemically produced toilet cleaners currently on the market and comes with the satisfaction of knowing what cleaning ingredients you are bringing into your living space.
MAKING A FIZZING TOILET CLEANER

UNDERSTANDING THE INGREDIENTS
BAKING SODA (SODIUM BICARBONATE)
Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is a powerful and natural cleaner made from soda ash. It is a must-have in your arsenal if you are wanting to transition into the world of crafting homemade cleaning products. Baking soda kicks serious booty when it comes to dissolving dirt and grim, and well, all of those other things found in the toilet; no need to go into detail. Due to the texture of baking soda, it is mildly abrasive, helping to scrub away any lingering debris. It is a gentle, yet effective scouring powder found in a lot of grease-fighting kitchen recipes.
As a deodorizer, baking soda is king in the bathroom. It doesn’t just mask odors, but actually neutralizes them - crucial anywhere near the toilet. With whitening properties, baking soda is also a great lightening agent, helpful with daily maintenance cleaning.
CITRIC ACID
Citric acid is an organic acid that occurs naturally in citrus fruits. However, most commercial citric acids available on the market are typically derived from a fermentation process of sugar cane or cassava. It has bactericide and fungicide properties that get to work killing those unwanted toilet germs. Citric acid is a powerful cleaning agent for removing hard water stains and calcium deposits that can build up with standing toilet water.
SEA SALT
Sea salt is an environmentally-friendly cleaning agent that also happens to enhance the odor eliminating action of baking soda. The gritty quality of sea salt, along with its absorption attributes, delivers an excellent scrubbing performance for toilet bowl accumulations.
LEMON ESSENTIAL OIL
Lemon essential oil evokes a fresh and clean feeling that can be energizing and enlivening. The essential oil is obtained from the peel of the lemon that contains d-limonene and pinene components, contributing to the antimicrobial, antiseptic, antiviral, and bactericidal properties of lemon essential oil.
LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL
Lavender is perhaps the most popular essential oil in aromatherapy. Its flowering tops offer antiseptic, antiviral, bactericidal, and fungicidal therapeutic actions. Not only is lavender essential oil a gem in the cleaning department, its beautiful bouquet of both feminine and masculine aromas can be enjoyed by all.
TEA TREE ESSENTIAL OIL
Tea tree essential oil, also known as Melaleuca, has a broad spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. (The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy, Salvatore Battaglia) It is my top go-to when germ assassination is a necessity - hence, a critical ingredient in the fizzing toilet powder recipe.
RUBBING ALCOHOL
Rubbing alcohol is a commonly utilized disinfectant, often found in first aid circumstances. It is also an excellent agent for cleaning dirt, grease, and oil off of surfaces. For these reasons, 91% rubbing alcohol is a powerful cleaning and sanitizing solution for the toilet. Due to its lower water content, 91% rubbing alcohol will not prematurely fizz the toilet cleaning solution.
