FLORAL ROOM MIST
Creating a natural room spray using essential oils to freshen your home is not only simple but also relatively inexpensive. Rather than reaching for a bottle of store-bought air freshener containing chemical fragrances and synthetic deodorizing agents, opt for a toxic-free alternative that can be crafted into a fun DIY recipe.
The best part about a homemade room mist is you can completely customize it. Perhaps you are in need of a spritz to combat stinky odors or wish to create a calming atmosphere before bedtime, or maybe you want to sanitize the air during flu season; a room spray can assist with any of the above, and so much more.
As a last ditch effort to hold on to the quickly fading aromas of summer, I have created a floral room mist to bring the delightful seasonal scents into my home. After spraying a room, I close my eyes and envision myself grazing through a meadow of blooming wildflowers as glowing hues of reds and oranges spread across the sky and the earth moves and grows beneath my feet. I can almost feel the gentle warmth of a summer night’s breeze dance across my sun-drenched skin. To me, it is happiness in a bottle!
MAKING A FLORAL ROOM MIST
Using a funnel, add 3 tablespoons of grain alcohol into a sterilized 4-ounce spray bottle. Add in 15 drops of 100% pure organic bergamot essential oil, 8 drops of 100% pure organic geranium essential oil, 6 drops of 100% pure organic clary sage essential oil, and 2 drops of 100% pure organic ylang ylang essential oil. Place the lid on the bottle and gently shake to thoroughly combine. Allow the mixture to sit for about 15 minutes and then add 1/4 cup of distilled water (or organic rose geranium hydrosol). Place the lid back on the bottle and gently shake to thoroughly combine again. Label your floral room mist with the contents and date of creation.
UNDERSTANDING THE INGREDIENTS
GRAIN ALCOHOL
Water and oil do not mix. As essential oils are the source of the natural aroma in this DIY floral room mist, they need to be dispersed throughout the liquid base. Grain alcohol, such as Everclear®, does the trick. I recommend using 189-proof alcohol because of its ability to somewhat evenly distribute the essential oils within the mixture. Using a high-proof alcohol helps the aromatics remain in the air longer, as well. Additionally, grain alcohol is a natural disinfectant, so while you are spritzing away, you are also minimizing household germs.
ESSENTIAL OILS
Essential oils are the smell-good element in this recipe. As I mentioned previously, you can personalize the room mist with a variety of aromas from essential oils. For the floral room mist, I am using an uplifting combination of bergamot, geranium, clary sage, and Ylang ylang.
DISTILLED WATER
With many homemade recipes that require water, distilled water is often recommended. Distilled water is free of contaminants like inorganic minerals and heavy metals which decreases the risk of bacteria introduction into DIY products, extending the shelf life of your recipes. You can also substitute distilled water for a hydrosol - rose geranium hydrosol is a lovely option.
